Keira Knightley est née le 22 mars 1985 à Teddington, Londres. Son père, Will Knightley, est acteur et sa mère, Sharman Macdonald, dramaturge.

 Elle fait ses débuts dans le milieu en tournant des spots publicitaires. Elle a 16 ans lorsqu'elle obtient le rôle de Sabé dans Star wars : épisode 1 - La Menace fantôme. Elle apparaît aussi dans des séries télévisées, Princess of thieves et Oliver Twist. En 2001, elle joue dans un thriller de Nick Hamm, The Hole.

L'année suivante, elle est l'héroïne de Joue-la comme Beckham. En 2003, elle donne la réplique à Johnny Depp dans Pirates des Caraïbes, la malédiction du Black Pearl. Elle joue ensuite dans Love actually et prête ses traits à Guenièvre dans Le Roi Arthur.
