Jared Leto étudie la peinture à l'University of the Arts de Philadelphie et le cinéma au Visual Arts de New York. Il s'installe à Los Angeles en 1992 et décroche en 1994 son premier rôle dans la série télévisée Angela, quinze ans, interprétée par Claire Danes. Il débute au cinéma en 1995 en donnant la réplique à Ellen Burstyn dans Le Patchwork de la vie, un drame de Jocelyn Moorhouse. Cinq ans plus tard, il collaborera à nouveau avec l'actrice américaine dans le traumatisant Requiem for a dream de Darren Aronofsky.

Né le 21 juillet 1978, il passe son enfance dans le Minnessota, avec ses trois frères et sœurs. Son diplôme universitaire en poche, il part à New York suivre des cours de comédie au S.U.N.Y.
Il repart ensuite pour Los Angeles.
Il obtient son premier rôle dans une série « Crakers » en 1997, puis enchaîne les publicités et les téléfilms.
En 1998, Il joue le fils de Jamie Lee Curtis dans « Halloween, 20 ans après ».On le voit ensuite dans « The faculty ».
Ensuite, Sofia Coppola lui fait confiance pour son premier film « Virgin Suicides ».
Il se montrera aussi convaincant dans « Pearl Harbor », et « La chute du faucon noir ».....( voir plus loin pour sa filmographie)
